Intelligent Knowledge-Based Engineering

Abstract

This report presents a successful approach and implementation for integrating product and process design. The generation of a process plan as an integrated part of a free-form feature-based parametric design system is discussed. The success of the approach, detailed in this report, for an automated process planner integrated with a design system, comes from its capability to reason about and automatically extract a manufacturing representation from the part design geometry. By analyzing the part geometry, and planning around the problems that could be encountered in machining, the automated planner can overcome the difficulties in automating the process plan. No user assistance is required and it does not rely on retrieving and/or modifying the process plans of similar parts stored in a database. Feature-based design, Knowledge-based engineering.
