Space Debris Detection and Analysis

Abstract

A 16 telescope with an image-intensified CCD camera has been deployed for testing for space debris detection. Sensitivity calibrations will take place after the ODERACS mission deploys calibration spheres from the Space Shuttle. An image analysis facility has been set up at Phillips Laboratory, and appropriate software written for image digitization and analysis. Various algorithms to extract low-level debris signatures from the night-sky background have been investigated. A model has been developed for debris population prediction from a known starting population distribution.
