East European Security After the Cold War

Abstract

This report was prepared as part of the project 'Emerging Issues in the Debate over a European Security Identity and Implications for U.S. Policy' sponsored by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. The project is being conducted in the International Security and Defense Strategy Program within RAND's National Defense Research Institute, a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Staff. In addition to the sources cited in this report, the author conducted extensive interviews with government officials and nongovernmental experts in Eastern and Western Europe during 1992 and 1993. The cutoff point for information on which this report is based is October 1993.
