Information Technology. DoD's Federal Logistics Data on Compact Disc Program.

Abstract

The Department of Defense initiated the program to publish the government's catalog of logistics information using a relatively new technology known as Compact Disc Read Only Memory, instead of the current media, microfiche. The program was developed and managed by the Defense Logistics Agency and its Defense Logistics Services Center. This report addresses (1) the appropriateness of the Services Center's development of a prototype compact disc system; (2) the Services Center's management of the prototype project; (3) the Defense Logistics Agency's plans to procure the software, hardware, and/or services needed to provide a compact disc system and the potential for commercial involvement in the procurement; and (4) the impact of the Agency's decision to include business or otherwise sensitive data in the product on its acquisition approach
