Aromatic Hydrocarbon Optrodes for Groundwater Monitoring Applications

Abstract

Research documented in this report produced a fiber-optic sensor utilizing a porous optical waveguide. This offered the advantage of improved sensitivity and specificity by impregnating fiber with a chemical indicator whose optical transmission properties change in the presence of aromatic species. The concept was adequately demonstrated the laboratory and a prototype optrode was developed which was sensitive for aromatic hydrocarbons to 50 ppb. The basic concept was proven.
