The Systems Engineering Approach to Mechanical Failure Prevention. Proceedings of the Meeting of the Mechanical Failures Prevention Group (47th) Held in Virginia Beach, Virginia on April 13-15, 1993.

Abstract

The MFPG was formed for the express purpose of stimulating and promoting voluntary cooperation among segments of the scientific and engineering communities in order to gain a better understanding of the processes of mechanical failures. The goals were to reduce the incidence of mechanical failures by improving design methodology, to devise methods of accurately predicting mechanical failures and to apply the increased knowledge of the field to the problems of our present technology. The purpose of the work of the Technical Committees is to: (1) Collect, analyze, and disseminate technical information on mechanical failures; (2) Facilitate the transfer of technology from government to the private sector; (3) Establish appropriate terminology, criteria and terms of reference; (4) Critically examine the field of mechanical failures to determine needed areas of endeavor and make suitable recommendations; (5) Provide advisory recommendations and technical expertise in the field; (6) Encourage research and development directed toward both the prior identification and the reduction of mechanical failures; (7) Maintain awareness all significant work relevant to the identified interest areas; (8) Stimulate interdisciplinary communication; (9) Periodically review the state-of-the-art of mechanical failure technology; facilitate transition of new laboratory developments into hardware capable of alleviating operational problems; and Identify areas in research and development where effort is disproportionate to promise and recommend action as deemed necessary.
