Simulator Requirements Analysis for the Virtual Brigade Training Program

Abstract

In November 1993, ARPA tasked IDA to conduct a quick analysis of the functional requirements for the Army's Virtual Brigade Training Program (VBTP). Two key factors dictated the urgency of this effort: (1) the expiration of a low cost option to buy computer image generators (CIGs) from the Close Combat Tactical Trainer (CCTT) contractor was imminent; and (2) the brigade was scheduled for its National Training Center (NTC) rotation in May 1996. Both ARPA and the Army needed a better understanding of VBTP requirements. In response, IDA established the Quick Look Team (QLT) to work concurrently and in cooperation with the Ft. Knox Program Action Teams (PATs) which have the mission of determining the functional requirements for the VBTP. The QLT recommendations were preliminary inputs to the Ft. Knox PATs. The QLT recommendations included immediate contracting for the doubling of the simulation facility's physical plant, and the construction of a low-cost-per-seat, reconfigurable simulator called a pod.
