Marginal Aggregates in Flexible Pavements: Background Survey and Experimental Plan

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the utilization of substandard or marginal aggregates in flexible pavement construction of airport pavements. This investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effects of using lower quality aggregates such as rounded uncrushed gravels and sands on the rutting of flexible pavements. The scope of this research study included a review of available literature and existing data (Phase T), a laboratory evaluation organized to determine the effects of marginal aggregates and potential techniques to upgrade these substandard materials (Phase II), and a field evaluation involving test sections utilizing the most promising techniques (Phase III). This report provides a review of existing data and literature concerning aggregate properties and their influence on the performance of base course materials and asphalt concrete mixtures. This report also discusses the experimental plan for this research study and provides a discussion and description of the state-of-the-art laboratory testing equipment that is being used to evaluate the engineering properties of the marginal aggregates. A summary and schedule of the remaining work has been included.
