Designing an Information Display for the Parafovia: Implications for the U.S. Army's Avenger Optical Sight

Abstract

Thirty subjects participated in a study comparing two methods of displaying visual information. Symbols on an Army missile-based weapon system, which are currently used to indicate critical system status, were redesigned in an effort to facilitate the uptake of information via the peripheral visual channel. Results revealed that it took significantly less time for subjects to make the correct decision using the enhanced display format.
