Novel Electrochemical Materials Prepared by Sol-Gel Chemistry

Abstract

Description of project: This program is directed at preparing and characterizing novel gels, xerogels, and aerogels which, because of their conductivity and/or charge storage capability, have unusual electrochemical characteristics. Typical materials of interest are the transition-metal oxides currently being exploited in their polycrystalline forms in the electrodes of the lithium batteries. Characterization involves structural and electrochemical studies, atomic force microscopy, and novel X-ray diffraction and mu FTIR techniques. One of several novel contributions of this work is the use of molecular dynamics simulation as a powerful source of insight into surface and bulk mechanisms in sol-gel synthesized materials.
