Hardcopy Extraction Considerations for Vector Product Format (VPF) Products.

Abstract

Vector Product Format (VPF) is a standard format, structure, and organization developed by the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) and intended to be used for large geographic product data bases. VPF product data- bases are often initially populated with data taken from existing hardcopy map source of the appropriate scale. Military Specifications are written for each new VPS product defining, among other things, the product's features, their attributes, and valid attribute values. The Military Specifications do not, however, address the issues introduced by the practice of feature collection from existing cartographic source. This paper addresses data collection and organizational issues from the production standpoint. Particular attention is given to VMap Level 1 experience.
