Field-Portable Reflectance Spectrometer.

Abstract

This study resulted in a design for an array detector based field spectroradiometer to be used for measurement of transmission and reflectance of man-made and natural materials using ambient solar illumination. This design is a significant advancement over currently available instrumentation. The design characteristics are: wavelength range from 0.35-2.5 micrometers spectral resolution of 4 nm (0.35-900 micrometers), 10 nm (0.9-2.5 micrometers); weight 15 pounds, exclusive of batteries; a minimum signal-to-noise ratio of 500:1 at 2200 nm under typical solar illumination; simultaneous acquisition of all wavelengths; operates at temperatures as low as -20 deg C; and, maintains radiometric calibration under field conditions. During Phase I a prototype was fabricated to test and validate this design. Government agencies using image data from high spectral resolution sensors will benefit. Additional applications include mineral resource evaluation, analytical chemistry and commercial remote sensing.
