Characterization of Plastic Bonded Explosives by Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography and Multivariate Data Analysis. Applications of the Procedure (Karakterisering van kunststof gebonden explosieven met pyrolyse-gaschromatografie en multivariate data analyse. Toepassing van de procedure).

Abstract

Applications of the developed procedure based on pyrolysis-gas chromatography (Py-GC) and principal component analysis (PCA) for the characterization of plastic bonded explosives (PBX's) are described. Due to difficulties with the commonly used normalization method a new normalization method was developed and applied in this investigation. The patterns in the score plots obtained after PCA of the Py-GC results appeared much clearer using this new method. PBX samples were examined on homogeneity, influence of the amount of antioxidant (Flexzone) and the crosslink density. It appears that PBX's were inhomogeneous despite a thorough mixing of the constituents during the preparation. Aging experiments were performed on samples which differed in the amount of Flexzone and in the crosslink density. As more Flexzone was added the change in the pattern of the GC-peaks became less. No relation could be found between the stability of PBX's and the crosslink density. Finally, a comparison was made between Dutch samples and samples from the UK and Norway. Small differences were observed between the samples from the three nations.
