Allogeneic and Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation in CHAMPUS 1989-1993 A Total Patient Treatment Episode Analysis.

Abstract

This report presents a detailed analysis of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) within the DOD Civilian Health and Medical Program for the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS) . The source of all data was the Tri-Service CHAMPUS Statistical Database Project (TCSDP), San Antonio, TX. Analysis was conducted on all patients who received an allogeneic or autologous BMT with a hospital discharge between October 1, 1988 and July 31, 1992. A series of software techniques were employed to develop a total patient treatment episode of BMT. Four BMT episode components are described: (1) PMT hospitalization (including assigned professional services), (2) BMT ambulatory professional and prescription services defined as part of that BMT hospitalization, (3) BMT-related hospitalizations tied to that BMT hospitalization, and (4) BMT-related ambulatory professional services. Mean billed charges and payments are summarized by EMT type, patient mortality category and major episode component, with an additional breakdown of payments by case types (all cases vs. complete episodes paid solely by U.S. government). Several distributional analyses are presented: beneficiary characteristics, both BMT and BMT-related hospitalization diagnoses, and grand total BMT episode mean billing charges by diagnosis.
