Material Modeling in the CRALE Code. Users' Manual.
Abstract
Finite difference for continuum mechanics codes are capable of providing solutions for the behavior of a wide range of materials under a variety of boundary and initial conditions. The key to obtaining accurate solutions lies in the fidelity of models used to describe the material's response to the strains imposed, i.e., its Equation of State (EOS). This report presents both the general EOS algorithms used in the CRALE 1- and 2D codes and several specific EOS models currently in use. A driver routine that exercises these models over specific load/unload paths is available to assist in developing and checking the parameters needed for materials of interest. A discussion of this driver and a users manual to assist in its use are also presented. In the course of developing EOS models of interest to DNA and as part of the TRT participation in the DNA HYDROPLUS program, a number of data bases have been developed. These include files containing; experimental shock Hugoniots and release paths, parameters for EOS models used in the HYDROPLUS program, and the nuclear shot experimental and calculational data bases developed for HYDROPLUS. A description of the various data bases with instructions for their access is included in this report.
