Offshore Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) Test and Evaluation Master Plan (TEMP).
Abstract
This document provides the test philosophy and approach for the Offshore Next Generation Weather Radar (NExRAD) Test and Evaluation Master Plan (TEMP). The NEXRAD differs from the typical Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) weather radar acquisition in that it is jointly funded by the Department of Defense (DOD), the Department of Commerce (DOC), and the Department of Transportation (DOT). These three agencies chartered the Joint System Program Office (JSPO) to manage the NENRAD development and subsequent test programs. JSPO has deployed 70 single-channel radar systems across the continental United States (CONUS) The FAA is deploying NEXRAD systems at non-CONUS (offshore) locations such as Alaska, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. The FAA Offshore NEXRAD will have a redundant configuration and a Remote Monitoring Subsystem (EMS). A total of 14 Offshore NEXPADs will be procured under this acquisition: 3 in the Caribbean, 4 in Hawaii, and 7 in Alaska. Funding constraints will limit the acquisition to seven NEXRADs in the 1994-1995 timeframe. (AN)
