The first volume contains a summary of the development of thoracic surgery in previous wars, the general and statistical background of the World War II experience, administrative considerations in the Mediterranean and European theaters and in the Zone of Interior, the evolution of policies of management of chest wounds, and the routine of management of thoracic casualties from their emergency care on the battlefield through their rehabilitation chest centers.
