Determinants of Effective Unit Performance: Research on Measuring and Managing Unit Training Readiness.

Abstract

One of the primary missions of the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (USARI) is to conduct research and development to maximize the performance effectiveness of combat units. In recent years, ARI has increased its emphasis on unit collective training research in recognition that, although the Army recruits individuals, it fights as units. The research reported in this volume employed a wide spectrum of behavioral and social science techniques for measuring and understanding the performance of units at both their home stations and at Combat Training Centers. ARI's research on unit collective training has not been without challenges. Chief among them has been the development of reliable measurement methods and technologies for assessing unit performance effectiveness. ARI has made considerable progress in its ability to measure performance and in its ability to make reliable statements about the determinants of unit performance at the Combat Training Centers.
