Comparative Study of the Desiccation Resistance of Zebra Mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) and Quagga Mussels (Dreissena bugensis).

Abstract

The emersion tolerance of zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) and quagga mussels (Dreissena bugensis) was comparatively studied. Mussels (n = 60) were emersed at 15 deg C under relative humidities (R.H.) of <5, 33, 53, 75, and >95 percent LT50 (i.e., time for 50-percent sample mortality estimated by probit analysis) in D. polymorpha ranged from 67.7 hr in <5-percent R.H. to 266.2 hr in >95-percent R.H. and SM(100) values (i.e., time required for actual 100-percent sample mortality), from 120 to 537 hr. LT50 and SM(100) value ranges for D. bugensis were 80A to 238.2 hr and 120 to 312 hr, respectively. Total water lost (TWL) during emersion (total water is corporal plus extracorporal water) was positively correlated with shell length (SL) and hours of emersion. While affected by TWL did not differ between species. -BKA
