Environmental Effects of Dredging: Confined Disposal Guidance for Small Hydraulic Maintenance Dredging Projects--Design Procedures.

Abstract

This note presents a simplified procedure for design of small confined disposal facilities. Applications of this procedure will be presented in a future technical note. The design approach is the same as presented in 'Confined Disposal of Dredged Material,' Engineer Manual (EM) 1110-2-5027 (Headquarters, US Army Corps of Engineers 1987), except that no settling tests are required. The guidance is limited to the design of areas to be used only for small one-time disposal operations. Typically, the areas are less than 10 acres in size and the disposal takes less than 20 days. This procedure does not require laboratory settling tests because the time and expense of these tests are generally not warranted for the small quantity of sediment being disposed. (MM)
