Building a Joint-Service Classification Research Road Map: Job Analysis Methodologies.

Abstract

The Armstrong Laboratory, the Army Research Institute, the Navy Personnel Research and Development Center, and the center for Naval Analysis are committed to enhancing the overall efficiency of the Services' selection and classification research agenda. This means reducing the redundancy or research efforts across Services and improving inter-Service research planning, while ensuring that each services' priority needs are served. The Road map project is composed of six tasks. This report documents the third task, a review and discussion of job analysis methodologies as they relate to joint service selection and classification goals. The review is structured around a framework which provides for two major categories of job descriptive information: Situation-oriented and person-oriented. Situation-oriented information describes the nature of work and/or environment where the work is to be performed. Person-oriented information describes the individual characteristics of people who are able to successfully perform various types of work in different contexts. In this report, the types of situation-oriented and person-oriented job descriptive information that can be collected is outlined. Projects which have attempted to establish linkages between these two domains are described. (AN)
