Behavior and Milk Yield Responses of Dairy Cattle to Simulated Jet Aircraft Noise.

Abstract

Objectives were to evaluate the effects of simulated jet aircraft noise on behavior, milk production and composition, and residual milk of lactating dairy cows and release of prolactin (Prl) and Cortisol (Gc) in response to the milking stimuli. Thirty-six lactating Holstein dairy cows were assigned to experiment when between 79 and 155 days in milk (DIM). Experiment was an incomplete block design with three treatments. Cows were assigned to receive two of the three treatments during consecutive 21-d periods, each of which was preceded by 5-7 d adjustment periods. Treatments were; (1) control (no noise), (2) simulated jet noise (onset 107.7 dB/sec; Max dBA 113.6), and (3) simulated jet noise (onset 33.5 dB/sec; Max dBA 113.3). Cows were exposed to noise on 10-12 d/period with a frequency of 1-4 times/d. Milk yields, milk composition and residual milk were measured throughout the experiment. Dairy cows showed no signs of startle, freeze or retreat from noise at any time during the experiment and were not more agitated or aggressive during subsequent milking. There was no evidence to indicate failure to detect behavioral response occurred because cows acclimated to noise during the 21-d period. Milk yield, 3.5% fat-corrected milk (FCM) yield, milk component percentages and residual milk were not affected significantly by exposure to simulated jet noise. Release of Prl and Gc at the time of milking in 12 of the cows (4 cows/treatment) did not differ due to exposure to noise. Effects on the different measures that were detected due to period, time of milking and other interactions were associated with advancing stage of lactation or management practices.
