Education's Influence on National Power.

Abstract

National security rests on the collective strengths of our elements of national power--economic, political, social, and military. However, these institutions are only edifices without the talents and capabilities of the nation's people. The foundation to it all is the nation's education system--how well the system prepares the citizenry is the sine qua non of our national security posture. Can we assess how well our educational system is doing by evaluating the performance of our basic national institutions? This paper examines two key elements of power--economic and political/social--to assess how the health of these institutions correlates with the performance of the nation's education system. An analysis of these measures and the author's conclusions are also offered.
