The Gulf War: Analysis of American and Arab Cross-Cultural Encounters.

Abstract

This analysis draws from a study based on interviews conducted with twenty-one U.S. Army personnel involved in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, 1990-1991. It shows the necessity of pre-operational preparation to enhance cross-cultural understanding and communication skills between Americans and other nationalities. By analyzing American-Arab interactions in the Middle Eastern War to defend Saudi Arabia and liberate Kuwait, the study points up both strengths and weaknesses in .U.S. military preparations and training in cross- cultural matters.
