Shelf Life Extension for POL Products.
Abstract
Extending the shelf life cycle of petroleum, oil, and lubricant (POL) products is clearly conservation effective for military petroleum and water handling distribution equipment (PWHE) as well as other vehicles and equipment To review shelf life requirements of POL products, a total twenty-three (23) specification products were evaluated using the Maximum Likelihood (ML) method for the Weibull distribution. Data utilized for this study were the results of routine shelf life testing from Army Petroleum Center (APC) and Air Force San Antonio Air logistics Center (SAALC). The results showed that the ML methodology can he used to predict the minimum/maximum shelf life of POL products, and the shelf life testing frequency of eleven of the twenty-three products evaluated can be extended from two years to three years without reformulation. These shelf life extensions will minimize the current problems related to lubricants used in preservation and refurbishment of PWHE for prepositioning, and logistics and supply burdens of lubricants. jg
