A Tactical Present Weather Sensor for Air Force Applications.

Abstract

A Present Weather Sensor has been developed for Air Force tactical applications under a Phillips Laboratory Broad Agency Announcement to meet the more general requirement for 'Automated Fixed/Bare Based Weather Sensors'. The Present Weather Sensor design is based on techniques evolved over a period of time by HSS Inc for the automated measurement of visibility and precipitation. The prototype sensor is a compact, rugged, light weight, single-package instrument capable of measuring visibility and several precipitation parameters (i.e. precipitation type, intensity and rate of fall). Preliminary tests demonstrate that the performance of the tactical sensor is comparable to that of the performance of the highly regarded larger HSS Inc Present Weather Sensors. (MM)
