Alternatives Assessment Other Contamination Sources, Interim Response Action, Shell Section 36 Trenches, RMA.

Abstract

This document describes the process and results of the alternatives assessment conducted for the shell section 36 trenches (site 36-3), approximately 31 trenches used from 1952 to 1966 for land disposal of liquid and solid wastes generated from pesticide manufacture. They have been shown to be a source of ground water contamination. A dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) is also believed to have originated from the trenches. The assessment includes the following: (1) Site characteristics. (2) Discussion of alternative strategies and technologies, (3) Evaluation of alternatives, and (4) Conclusions. The preferred interim response action consists of (1) a physical barrier encircling the trenches and (2) a soil and vegetative cover.
