This report provides and overview of the in situ vitrification technology and its applicability to direct remediation treatment of various types of hazardous wastes. It is divided into the following sections: (1) Process and equipment description, (2) Applicability considerations - Waste composition, presence of water, site topography, (3) Evaluation criteria - permanence, reduction of toxicity, cost, implementability, (4) Comparison to alternatives.
