Reorganization at the Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division, Indianapolis Indiana: A Case Study.

Abstract

This thesis documents and analyzes a transformation at NAWC-ADl from a hierarchical, functionally defined organization to a matrix, team-based organizational design. In-depth interviews with 15 NAWC-ADl managers, along with archival records, informed the development of a case study documenting this transformation. Historical, contextual, interpersonal, and organizational dynamics that contributed to redefining the working relationships at NAWC-ADl are discussed. This case analysis addresses objectives and processes used in planning and implementing the reorganization, as well as areas of difficulty in conceptualizing and planning the implementation of the reorganization.
