Select Wastewater Characterization Survey, Clear Air Force Station, Alaska.

Abstract

Personnel from the Armstrong Laboratory Water Quality Branch conducted a follow-up wastewater characterization survey for HQ/AFSPC at Clear Air Force Station, Alaska from 11-19 April 1995. he scope of this survey was to sample specific outfalls that were evaluated or available during the previous 1992 survey. In addition, there were several areas that required evaluation to ascertain if they required an industrial discharge permit. The cooling system for the Power Plant was also evaluated for water and wastewater issues. There is currently a large volume of makeup water created each day, requiring caustic soda and sulfuric acid treatment. These chemicals, along with chlorine have been responsible for fish kills. A better system can be installed, and the current steam plumbing system modified to minimize the use of chemical treatment and mitigate potential future excursions. (KAR) P. 3
