Midway: A Case Study the Role of Major Operations in Maritime Campaigns.

Abstract

As demonstrated in the Battle of Midway, major operations are characterized by large scope, a high level of command and planning, short duration and operational or strategic purpose. Offensive major operations may be used to extend operational reach or attack the enemy center of gravity, or achieve command of the air, sea, or littoral areas. Operational commanders must sequence, prioritize, and support major operations with theater functional systems such as operational fires, intelligence and reconnaissance.
