Pay Equity: Washington State's Efforts to Address Comparable Worth.

Abstract

This briefing report responds in part to your request for information on nonfederal governmental efforts to provide equal pay for work of comparable value. It reviews the actions taken to date by the state of Washington, which is often cited as being in the forefront of efforts to address comparable worth. We are continuing our efforts to look at (1) whether the federal government's factor evaluation system is affected by gender and/or race disparity and (2) other nonfederal governmental efforts to address comparable worth. On June 25,1992, we briefed Congresswoman Oakar, her staff, and representatives of the Chairman of the Committee on Post Office and Civil Service on the results of our work on the state of Washington's efforts to bring about comparable worth. This letter summarizes the information provided at that briefing. A more extensive discussion is in appendix I.
