The Logistical Implications of the Prussion Use of Railroads for Strategic and Operational Mobility, 1857-1914.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact that the use of railroads had on the general performance of the Prussian logistics system. Between l857-l9l4 the Prussians continually expanded their use of railroads for the strategic and operational movement of soldiers and supplies. At the same time their tactical transportation system remained largely unchanged, primarily relying on horses and wagons. This wide technological gap between the strategic/operational and the tactical modes of transportation was a source of continual logistical difficulty for the Prussians. Throughout the period the Prussian Army had great difficulty tactically distributing supplies delivered by the railroads. This study explains how this situation developed, and what was its consequence. It highlights the problems that nations face when they develop one system to the exclusion of its supporting systems.
