Picatinny Arsenal Cylinder Expansion Test and a Mathematical Examination of the Expanding Cylinder.

Abstract

To measure the effectiveness of an explosive, the cylinder expansion test is used. In order to decrease the cost and make performance testing available to smaller batch sizes in development, a reduced scale cylinder test as developed. To directly compare test results from different sized cylinders, a new Gurney equation was developed. Mathematical estimations were developed to examine the effects of the thinning walls in the cylinders to the measured performance.
