Hydrodynamic Conditions in the Black River Delta/Lake Onalaska Area, Pool 7, Upper Mississippi River, 1980-81 and 1991-92.

Abstract

Lake Onalaska is connected to the main channel of the Mississippi River and to the Black River by a network of secondary and distributary channels. Concerns have developed that changes in the flow conveyance of these channels, due to erosion and deposition, is altering the long term distribution of water in Lake Onalaska; with the ration of Mississippi River to Black River water increasing. Maintaining or decreasing this ratio is desirable due to the better water clarity of the Black River. To quantify these changes, water discharge and water surface elevation data was collected in 1991 and 1992. The unanswered question is whether there is a longterm trend towards decreasing Black River flow to Lake Onalaska. The data collected in 1991/92 provides a baseline by which this trend can be verified in the future.
