Electrical Insulation Fire Characteristics. Volume I. Flammability Tests.

Abstract

The results of work conducted under DOT/TSC contract #1221 are presented. Standard flammability, smoke emission, and circuit integrity tests were developed for electrical wire and cable insulating materials used in rapid transit system vehicles and wayside installations. Wire and cable insulating materials presently in use on rapid transit systems and newer polymeric materials proposed for such systems were tested and ranked with respect to their performance during the tests. Also presented is a discussion of the need for such standard tests, the criteria for the selection of a test method, the development of the test details, and a description of the standard tests.
