Substitution of Cleaners With Biodegradable Solvents, Part 1.

Abstract

This report is divided into parts. Part 1 consists of the front matter, text, and Appendixes A through F, pages 1-224. Part 2 consists of Appendixes G through K, pages 225-380. The overall objective of this program, titled Substitution of Cleaners with Biodegradable Solvents, is to (a) replace the toxic chemicals currently in use with solvents that are biodegradable, can be processed at Air Force IWTPs, are less hazardous to personnel, and reduce or eliminate toxic wastes and other harmful emissions; (b) demonstrate at Tinker AFB, the solvents/processes identified or developed that meet the specified requirements; and (c) establish procedures for future testing of solvents for these applications. In Phase I, many candidate solvents were screened, and several were chosen for extended performance testing in Phase II. In phase III the most promising solvents from Phase II were tested with Air Force parts in full-scale processes. Phases II and III are reported here. The work was performed through the U.S. Department of Energy by EG&G Idaho Inc., personnel of the Idaho National Engineering laboratory. jg p.3
