Replacement of P-D-680 Solvents for General Maintenance of DoD Equipment.

Abstract

P-D-680 solvents are currently classified as Mineral Spirit solvents and widely used for maintenance cleaning and degreasing of parts for DOD ground vehicles, aircraft and equipment. Recently, numerous federal, state, local regulations impact usage of P-D-680 solvents as being a hazardous waste, a flammable material, a somewhat toxic substance, and an air pollutant. As preparing activity for P-D-680, work was undertaken to consider environmentally compliant alternatives to P-D680 which would meet military requirements. During a period of FY94-95, a user survey for P-D-680 solvents and commercial alternative solvent evaluations were completed and twenty-three (23) commercial solvents were identified as candidate alternative P-D-680 solvents. These products provide excellent solvency and are currently listed as less hazardous solvents, and meet the federal and local environmental laws (i.e., RCRA). In addition, these candidate solvents can be recycled which will be reduce the wastestream. jg p3
