Baseline Risk Assessment for the Fire Protection Training Area, POL Area, and the West Unit Source Areas of Galena Airport, Alaska. Volume 1--Text.

Abstract

The U.S. Air Force (USAF), under the Installation Restoration Program (IRP), has conducted a remedial investigation (RI) at Galena Airport (formerly Galena Air Force Station). Within the framework of the IRP, the objective of the RI is to evaluate past hazardous waste disposal and spill sites at Galena Airport. The RI determines the nature and extent of possible contamination, identifies site physical characteristics that may affect contaminant distribution, and defines possible migration pathways. A baseline risk assessment (BRA) was conducted to support the RI. The BRA determines whether there is a possible threat to human health and/or the environment attributable to the sites under investigation. For sites that pose an unacceptable threat to either human health or the environment, remedial actions will be developed.
