An ECDIS/Track Predictor Prototype on Top of the GEO++ System,

Abstract

Under contract to the Royal Netherlands Navy (contract no. A9O/KM/332), the TNO Human Factors Research Institute investigates new user-interface concepts for ECDIS-based navigation support systems. On the basis of a two-stage description of track planning, a user interface has been designed for an integrated ECDIS/track-prediction system which assists the master in the preparation of manoeuvres. Both ECDIS display and track-prediction interface conform to existing specifications (IHO respectively OSF/Motif), so that the interface can be integrated with existing (commercial) ECDIS systems. Regarding further research, it is recommended to focus attention on the information presentation during the execution of a manoeuvre, in order to assist the master in a fast detection of deviations between predictions and observations on the basis of which feedback corrections can be determined.
