Exploratory Investigation of the Effect of Nylon Grain Size on Ablation of Phenolic Nylon.

Abstract

In the present investigation, two series of powdered-nylon-phenolic-resin test specimens were subjected to a Mach 2 air stream which had a stagnation pressure of approximately tOO psia (0.69 MN/sq m), and stagnation temperatures from 2300 deg R to 3600 deg R (1278 deg K to 2000 deg K). The first series of test specimens contained nylon having a grain size larger than 0.0098 inch (0.25 mm), and the second series contained nylon having a grain size smaller than 0.0017 inch (0.043 mm). Both series of test specimens were also tested in nitrogen in an effort to determine the importance of oxidation as a char-removal mechanism.
