Review of Literature on Environmentally Conscious Design.

Abstract

In support of current research tasks, IDA has reviewed the literature and prepared annotated abstracts of bibliographical information directly related to environmentally conscious design. This literature compilation focuses on industrial ecology, Design for Environment (DFE), and life cycle assessments. Additional topics include computer-based systems for environmentally conscious design, economic aspects of DFE, pollution-prevention activities centered on material substitution or process change, risk analysis, and affirmative engineering, which addresses the recycling and economic reuse of previously used materials. Total quality management and system-oriented design are also included to the extent that they address environmental considerations.
