Advanced Technology Cleaning Methods for High-Precision Cleaning of Guidance System Components.
Abstract
This report summarizes research activity undertaken for the Aerospace Guidance and Metrology Center (AGMC) at Newark Air Force Base, Ohio in support of their goal of finding methods, materials, and technologies that will permit them to perform their maintenance mission with greatly reduced utilization of solvents that are hazardous to workers and the environment. The maintenance of guidance system components often entails removal of organic adhesives and low residue cleaning of high value precision metal parts in the disassembly, repair, and preparation for reassembly stages. In the past, strong solvents that may be toxic, carcinogenic, or detrimental to the environment have been used effectively for this purpose. The objective of the research conducted under this program was to assess the possible role of advanced technology cleaning methods (such as laser and plasma cleaning) in maintenance of high-precision guidance system components and to provide preliminary experimental data to support this assessment. The research included identification of candidate cleaning tasks, assessment of the advanced cleaning technology base, and experimental demonstration of laser cleaning approaches.
