National Dredging Needs of Ports and Harbors in the U.S. Literature Search.

Abstract

This Literature Search presents a synopsis of existing literature concerning the current situation of ports in the United States. The studies and reports which were reviewed are from public and private sources and discuss the following pertinent issues: port capacity; forecast of trade; forecast of capacity; environmental dredging impediments or beneficial uses; technological changes; policy impacts; dredging maintenance; dredging construction; economics and finance; legislative and current trade. These studies and reports, as a group, describe the current status of the U.S. port system and relate levels of commerical use, projected growth, usage of harbors, development of landside facilities, physical limitations of the ports, and trade impacts caused by policy decisions. A bibliography is presented which includes 232 citations.
