Penetration of ESD Fields Through Small Apertures in the Titan IV Payload Fairing.

Abstract

The new thermal protection system (TPS) for the biconic section of the Titan IV payload fairing (PLF) is a dielectric material that will electrically charge when the launch vehicle passes through clouds containing ice or snow particles. The fairing can charge to sufficiently high voltages to cause electrostatic discharges (ESD) to occur along the surface of the PLF. The Titan IV PLF has a few small openings that will serve as apertures for the entry of electromagnetic fields radiated by the discharges on the surface of the PLF. This report documents the analysis approach used to calculate the field levels on and within the PLF.
