Evaluation of the Design and Process Parameter Selection for LOVA Plant and Degree of Mixedness Analyses of LOVA Formulations.

Abstract

This project has developed and utilized novel wide angle x-ray diffraction based techniques to analyze the degree of mixedness of energetic materials. The developed techniques were applied to various LOVA samples. Furthermore, the project has identified the major obstacles to the continuous processing of LOVA formulations using twin screw extruders. Based on Stevens input, Thiokol Corporation (Government Contractor for LOVA processing) has modified its processing technology. Finally, the equipment functional criteria of Thiokol were reviewed and advice based on our research results were provided.
