IGES Transfer and Manufacturing Demonstration. CALS EXPO '93 - AutoFact '93, MIL-D-28000A (IGES), MIL-R-28002A (Raster). Test Report.

Abstract

The Department of Defense (DoD) Air Force Continuous Acquisition and Life-Cycle Support (CALS) Program is an initiative to develop the ability to transfer technical information in a neutral digitized format through an open systems architecture such that the data exchanged has utility to anyone with access. To accomplish this goal the data format and 'rules of language' for the data must be common to all parties. This calls for the use of specifications and standards currently approved and in use by the DoD, its contractors, and the general public. The CALS Program has adopted a set of standards and specifications to be used in the pursuit of this goal. Through proper application of these specifications and standards, data can be formatted, tagged, and organized so that transfer in an open systems environment is possible. The challenge is to have correct, complete, and unambiguous specifications and standards, and to apply them properly. The mission of the Air Force CALS Test Bed (AFCTB), as part of the larger Air Force CALS Test Network (AFCTN), is to evaluate the effectiveness of the CALS standards for technical data interchange and to demonstrate the technical capabilities and operational suitability of those standards. The AFCTB is chartered to carry out tests to accomplish its mission.
