SEAWOLF Digital Data Transfer Program: Implementation of IGES for the Acquisition of a Major Weapons System.
Abstract
The DoD Computer-aided Acquisition and Logistics Support (CALS) Test Network (CTN) is conducting tests of the military standard for the Automated Interchange of Technical Information, MIL-STD-1840A 1 and its companion suite of military specifications. The CTN is a DoD sponsored confederation of voluntary participants from industry and Government, managed jointly by a technical staff at Air Force Logistics Command (AFLC) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The objective of CTN tests is to demonstrate and evaluate the interchange and functional use of digital technical information between industry and government using the CALS standards. This document will provide information to organizations which are beginning to implement neutral file database transfers to reduce duplication of effort. The purpose is to educate the CALS community to the efforts and lessons learned in two areas; exchanging drawings using IGES 2 and creating and implementing IGES for the exchange of 3-D design data for piping and structure. Although the efforts of the SEAWOLF Digital Data Transfer Program have been documented in many naval and marine engineering technical journals, there still seems to be a lack of specific knowledge of these efforts in the data exchange community.
