How to Validate Document Type Definitions (DTDs).

Abstract

Document Type Definition Independent Verification and Validation is the final step in the process of creating and testing an SGML Document Type Definition prepared in compliance with the CALS standard MIL-M-28001A. The sequence of tasks of which Independent Verification and Validation is the final step includes: examination and analysis of a selected class of related documents, and of the use that is expected to be made of those documents; design of a markup language which effectively and efficiently captures the information in documents of the selected type; formal description of the markup language using a Document Type Definition (DTD) conforming to the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML); and testing the markup language and its formal description by marking up sample documents of the selected class and processing them in ways that exemplify their expected uses.
