Mobile Testbed for Experiments in Machine Perception and Learning.

Abstract

One of the major goals of our research in image understanding is to test and evaluate algorithms under real world situations. To accomplish this goal, we are developing a mobile platform equipped with sensors and on-board computers. use an off the shelf electric cart that has been modified and equipped with a pan-tilt camera unit and other hardware for steering and speed control. We have also developed dedicated mechanical and electronic systems for steering and vehicle control, which are monitored by a SUN workstation. Under this Defense University Research Instrumentation grant we have purchased an Imaging Technology Inc. (ITI) real-time image processing hardware, and a SUN workstation. Pan/tilt camera system, steering and speed control, video/sonar sensors and SUN workstation interact with a Z-180 Micro-Controller. Input from video sensors goes to the ITI 150/40 image processing system that is directly connected to the SUN workstation. The mobile testbed will be used for advancing the state-of-the-art in algorithms by performing experiments in perception and learning in outdoor environments. Further, the development of this platform has provided much needed hands-on experience to students in system engineering, software, hardware and robust algorithm development.
